Just after I moved to Ottawa I bought a Leslie 122 from a guy in Montréal. It didn't come with covers for the horn and tremolo compartments. I put the Leslie with the back against my window and started playing.
This was my first Leslie, and deeply fascinated with this incredible piece of technology I left it running day and night. Damn, it looked *so* cool with the horns spinning. Whoosh, whoosh.
One day I was taking out the garbage when the woman next door approached me. Said she was very concerned about her privacy. I stared at her blankly and went - "uhhh?".
Well, guess what? She had noticed the radar I had spinning in my living room. And that eerie tube glow at night. She thought I was spying on her and her husband. Either that or communicating with aliens.
"Riiiiiight" (Time to reconsider your Weekly World News subscription, lady)
Being a former student of physics I tried to explain to her in minute technical detail how a radar works. And I told her that even if it had been a radar, she shouldn't be concerned about her privacy.
Dissatisfied with my "radars and human flesh are natural enemies" explanation the woman frowned and kept ranting. Clearly we weren't speaking the same language. I then tried the this-is-a-speaker-for-my-organ approach. Yet another evil stare.
At that point I decided the whole discussion was futile and suggested a tinfoil hat.
That worked. Pleased with the answer she turned around and went away. And a few weeks later there was an "Appartment For Rent" sign in the front yard.
Fortunately none of the new tenants have expressed concerns about my steadily growing collection of alien attracting apparatus...
